i loved young folks, i really did.
but there was also a time i couldn’t stand the mere mention of it.
you could hear it on the radio after rihanna’s umbrella was played, followed by some sean kingston.
it made me sick.
the streets were flooded with boys and girls who wore PBJ tees like it was a badge of superiority.
well, i’m assuming.
then there was an instance when a few inebriated girls were spotted screaming that young folks was their favorite song of all time.
i flinched.
Suddenly, it didn’t mean that much to me anymore.
Somehow, it didn’t feel special.
Before you start mentioning those indie ‘purists’, i’m not one of them.
I dont wear skinny jeans as a staple or those v-neck cardigans, which in my opinion makes one look frail and sickly.
Neither am i one to judge a person by the music he/she listens to.
I appreciate too many genres to judge one by his/her preference.
I just hated the radio for destroying young folks, with others even calling them the wrong folks.
It was something special but just like canteen food, when some things are mass produced it just aint that nice anymore isnt it?
I dont think people should shun ubiquity, but rather appreciate things in their own space.
I’d rather not have PBJ-street teams in my face at every corner.
That being said, i have come a full circle and am beginning to appreciate young folks again, now that the out of control ‘hipness’ to it has died down.
here are 2 covers which helped me.
go on, dont be afraid, it really was a good song.
